Former MD Anderson researcher charged
A former researcher at Houston-based University Texas of MD Anderson has been charged with theft of trade secrets and tampering with a government record, according to an Aug. 25 report from the Houston Chronicle.
The researcher, Yunhai Li, PhD, was stopped from leaving the country July 9 by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security agents at the airport, who claimed to have found two phones and a laptop containing evidence of MD Anderson files, the report said.
“As of July 1, 2025, Yunhai Li is no longer employed by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center,” an MD Anderson representative said in a statement shared with Becker’s. “Institutional leaders are working with relevant authorities on this matter.”
According to the Chronicle, a complaint from the Texas Department of Public Safety investigator said that, while employed at MD Anderson, Dr. Li was simultaneously working for Chongqing (China) Medical University and receiving funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
