Hospitals invest in AI despite doubts about readiness: Report

A majority of hospital and health system executives believe AI could improve clinical decision-making and cut costs, but few say they are ready to integrate the technology into day-to-day care, an Aug. 26 report from Sage Growth Partners found.

Sage Growth Partners surveyed 101 executives across integrated delivery networks, academic medical centers and independent hospitals about their perspectives on AI opportunities, obstacles and investment priorities.

Here are four key findings from the report:

  1. Eighty-three percent of executives surveyed said AI can improve clinical decision-making, and 75% said it could reduce operational costs through efficiencies.
  2. Sixty-seven percent reported current investments in AI to enhance patient care, and 66% are pursuing solutions to streamline administrative operations.
  3. Only 13% said they have a clear strategy for integrating AI into clinical workflows.
  4. Just 12% of respondents said they believe today’s AI algorithms are reliable enough to trust, and only 10% reported that their organizations are aggressively pursuing AI.
  5. Forty-nine percent of respondents cited appropriate use of AI as one of their top three challenges.
