MetroHealth to close 6 outpatient locations as part of stabilization plan

MetroHealth plans to close six outpatient offices in October to improve operational efficiency and stabilize its finances.

The Cleveland-based system said services offered at the affected sites will be consolidated to larger locations and enable it to expand services and hours of operation, according to an Aug. 25 news release.

Effective Oct. 3, the following locations will close:

  • Broadview Heights Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy
  • The Dental Clinic at Old Brooklyn Medical Center
  • Medina Health Center
  • Rocky River Medical Offices
  • State Road Family Practice
  • Westlake Physical Therapy

Over the last decade, MetroHealth said its service area expansions have led to duplication of services and operational inefficiencies. The closures will enable the health system to “streamline operations and increase access to care by providing more services in a single location and offering expanded services,” it said in the release.

MetroHealth plans to open an outpatient health center on its main campus in early 2026 that will include a 24/7 pharmacy.

“Our patients and community are at the heart of every decision we make,” Christine Alexander, MD, the health system’s president and CEO, said in a statement. “While closing these locations is not easy, it’s a necessary step to ensure we can provide compassionate care in the most efficient way.”

The move marks the latest step in the health system’s financial stabilization plan after several years of operating losses. In July, MetroHealth laid off 125 employees, most of whom worked in administrative roles, citing ongoing financial pressures and uncertainty surrounding federal funding levels in the future. MetroHealth said it currently spends more than $1 million per day on charity care, a figure that has doubled over the past few years.

“Any organization, especially one facing financial challenges, must constantly look at ways to operate more efficiently,” Dr. Alexander said. “This move is a continuation of our efforts to right-size our footprint by aligning our resources with our priorities.”
