Florida hospital adds organ donor registration to MyChart
Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital has added a new organ donor registration feature to its MyChart platform. The feature allows patients to register as organ, eye and tissue donors through the National Donate Life Registry directly within the hospital’s EHR system.
This enhancement is the first of its kind for Florida residents and aims to reduce barriers to registration, according to an Aug. 22 news release.
Tampa General’s Transplant Institute completed 889 transplants in 2024, the highest volume of any transplant center in the United States. The program is led by Kiran Dhanireddy, MD, vice president and chief of the TGH Transplant Institute and associate professor of surgery at USF Health Morsani College of Medicine.
More than 100,000 people in the United States are currently awaiting lifesaving transplants. One donor can save up to eight lives, restore sight to two individuals, and heal more than 75 others through tissue donation, according to the release. While only half of U.S. adults are registered donors, 90% say they support organ donation. The MyChart integration aims to help close that gap by offering a more convenient registration pathway for patients.
