Why Epic doesn’t have a traditional marketing department
Epic Systems doesn’t have a traditional marketing department or advertise its products, relying instead on word of mouth and its founder and CEO Judy Faulkner, CNBC reported Aug. 16.
Ardent Health CEO Marty Bonick told the publication that when he was weighing whether to convert some of his hospitals to Epic’s products, it was Ms. Faulkner who persuaded him.
When Mr. Bonick joined Nashville, Tenn.-based Ardent in 2020, about two-thirds of the health system’s hospitals were already using Epic. Having never worked with the vendor before, Mr. Bonick said he wanted to ensure converting the remaining hospitals would be worth the cost and effort.
Mr. Bonick recalled telling Ms. Faulkner that he had heard Epic’s system was expensive and difficult to implement. In response, she gave a personal 90-minute presentation.
“I had to say, ‘OK, time out. I’ve got another meeting to go to,’ but she really was not watching the clock,” Mr. Bonick said.
