Jefferson Health launches AI-powered cancer treatment

Cherry Hill, N.J.-based Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital has become the first oncology center in Southern New Jersey to implement a radiation therapy platform driven by artificial intelligence.

The Ethos linear accelerator uses AI and adaptive therapy to adjust a patient’s radiation dose in real time based on changes in anatomy and tumor position, according to an Aug. 14 news release. The approach is designed to improve precision and reduce exposure to healthy tissue, including for tumors that shift before or during treatment, such as those in the prostate, liver, pancreas and lungs.

Tamara LaCouture, MD, chief of cancer services for Jefferson Health New Jersey, said the AI-powered system allows on-the-spot adjustments to radiation delivery, often in fewer sessions — potentially just five or fewer — while enhancing tumor control and protecting normal tissue.

The cancer center offers medical and surgical oncology, advanced screening, clinical trials and other services as part of Jefferson’s National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer program.
