The week in hospital M&A
An Ohio system added its sixth hospital and HonorHealth struck a deal to acquire a medical group from Cigna.
Here are five health system M&A moves Becker’s reported during the week of Sept. 1:
1. Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC Health is moving closer to acquiring majority ownership of Georgetown, S.C.-based Tidelands Health, with the deal expected to close this fall.
Under the agreement, the Medical University Hospital Authority will acquire a majority membership interest in Tidelands Health. The partnership will preserve Tidelands Health’s identity as a community-led health system with local governance representation. All current employees will remain in place, and patients will continue to see their providers while gaining broader access to MUSC Health’s statewide network of advanced care and specialists.
2. Scottsdale, Ariz.-based HonorHealth signed an agreement to acquire Evernorth Care Group, a subsidiary of The Cigna Group.
Evernorth Care Group operates 18 clinics in the greater Phoenix area and provides integrated primary care services to nearly 80,000 patients. The clinics will join HonorHealth upon closing of the transaction, which is expected to occur in January, pending legal and regulatory approvals.
3. Cincinnati-based TriHealth completed its acquisition of Clinton Memorial Hospital, a 140-bed facility in Wilmington, Ohio, marking it as its sixth acute care hospital.
The facility will be renamed TriHealth Clinton Regional Hospital and serve as a hub for the system’s specialized services, including women’s health, cancer, heart and vascular, neurosciences and stroke care.
4. West Des Moines, Iowa-based UnityPoint Health completed its acquisition of Sioux City, Iowa-based MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center.
The hospital will now be called UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s – Downtown.
5. The University of Texas at San Antonio merged with The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio on Sept. 1 to become The University of Texas at San Antonio.
The institution, which is now Texas’ third-largest public research university, comprises 15 colleges and schools across six campuses, around 40,000 students, 17,000 employees, more than 320 undergraduate and graduate degrees, $486 million in annual research expenditures and a $1.3 billion endowment
