Physician search timelines stretch despite steady demand: 6 notes
While recruitment demand for physicians remains steady, search times continue to rise, and turnover persists, according to the Association for Advancing Physician and Provider Recruitment’s annual benchmarking report.
The report, released Sept. 10, is based on data from 128 health organizations on 15,244 searches, 61% of which were for physicians.
Six findings from the report:
1. The typical organization conducted 96 physician and provider searches last year, while large health systems conducted 368.
2. Most common physician searches occurred in hospital medicine (10.8%), family medicine (10.6%), OB-GYN: general (7.8%) and internal medicine (5.8%).
3. Median time-to-fill was 118 days for physicians, compared to 77 days for advanced practice providers. Surgical and specialty searches took the most time to fill, with oncology requiring a median of 332 days.
4. Physicians accepted 71% of offers last year, compared to 83% in 2023. APPs accepted 80%, up from 71% in 2024.
5. Median turnover rates for physicians (7.3%) and APPs (7.9%) remain above pre-pandemic levels.
6. Three-fourths of organizations use applicant tracking systems. However, more than two-thirds of recruitment professionals rated their technology as only “average” or below.
