MUSC to acquire majority stake in Tidelands Health
Charleston, S.C.-based MUSC Health is moving closer to acquiring majority ownership of Georgetown, S.C.-based Tidelands Health, with the deal expected to close this fall.
The proposed expansion cleared several regulatory hurdles in August, receiving approvals from the Joint Bond Review Committee, the State Fiscal Accountability Authority and both systems’ boards.
“This marks a pivotal moment for our health system and the communities we serve,” Bruce Bailey, CEO of Georgetown, S.C.-based Tidelands Health, said in a Sept. 5 news release. “We are one step closer to realizing a transformative partnership that will expand access to care, enhance services and improve health outcomes across Georgetown and Horry counties.”
Under the agreement, the Medical University Hospital Authority will acquire a majority membership interest in Tidelands Health, deepening integration of services, technology and clinical expertise. The move builds on a 25-year partnership between the organizations.
“With state and board approvals now complete, we are focused on finalizing the agreement and preparing for a seamless transition that will benefit patients, providers and the local communities,” Patrick Cawley, MD, CEO of MUSC Health and executive vice president for health affairs for the university, said.
The partnership will preserve Tidelands Health’s identity as a community-led health system with local governance representation. All current employees will remain in place, and patients will continue to see their providers while gaining broader access to MUSC Health’s statewide network of advanced care and specialists.
Planned investments include construction of Tidelands Health Carolina Bays Hospital, development of new emergency and urgent care centers and expanded physician recruitment.
