LCMC Health adds organ donor registration to MyChart
New Orleans-based LCMC Health has integrated organ, eye and tissue donor registration into its MyChart patient portal, marking the first such offering for Louisiana residents.
The new feature enables patients to enroll in the National Donate Life Registry directly through the Epic-powered platform. Once registered, a patient’s donor status is portable, remaining valid even if the patient relocates outside Louisiana or transfers care outside of LCMC Health, according to a Sept. 4 news release. The registration is used transplant, research and educational purposes, and is not visible to care teams.
LCMC Health President and Chief Medical Officer John Heaton, MD, said the move is part of a broader effort to improve community health by simplifying access to organ donation registration.
More than 1,800 people in Louisiana are currently on the organ transplant waiting list, with over 65% representing multiethnic communities. Nationally, more than 100,000 people await a transplant. On average, 13 people die each day in the U.S. waiting for an organ, and a new person is added to the list every eight minutes, according to the release.
