Former Steward hospitals, new owner rebrand under single system

Lawrence (Mass.) General Hospital and its two Holy Family Hospitals in Haverhill, Mass., and Methuen, Mass., respectively, have rebranded and now operate as a single system, Merrimack Health, based in Haverhill according to a Sept. 9 news release shared with Becker’s.

The three hospitals will be the first health system to serve Massachusetts’ Merrimack Valley under the rebranding, and will provide care to 13 cities and towns across the region.

The facilities will be renamed Merrimack Health Lawrence Hospital, Merrimack Health Haverhill Hospital and Merrimack Health Methuen Hospital. The associated community physician practices will also become Merrimack Health Community Medical Associates.

Lawrence General received bankruptcy court approval Sept. 4, 2024, to purchase both Holy Family facilities from Dallas-based Steward Health Care in a $28 million deal, and officially assumed control on Oct. 1.

“One year ago, with the strong support of [Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey] and [Secretary of Health and Human Services of Massachusetts] Kate Walsh, Lawrence General and Holy Family Hospitals came together to ensure continued access to high-quality, comprehensive healthcare in the Merrimack Valley,” Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll said in the release. “These hospitals and their dedicated health care professionals tirelessly and admirably cared for patients despite facing significant challenges. Now, we celebrate uniting these hospitals as Merrimack Health, together delivering the care that these communities deserve and that makes our state proud.”
