Closed Mercyhealth Illinois hospital sold to local pastor
Rockford, Ill.-based Mercyhealth has signed a purchase agreement with pastor Melvin Brown, PhD, and his wife, Sheila Brown, for its shuttered Javon Bea Hospital-Rockton in Rockford.
The hospital closed in early July after Mercyhealth filed a “temporary suspension of services” with the state. In late 2021, the health system filed an application with the Illinois Health and Services Review Board to end inpatient services at the hospital.
“The Browns have spent more than 30 years ministering and providing social support for members of the Rockford community,” Kara Sankey, vice president of Mercyhealth, said in a Sept. 4 statement shared with Becker’s. “Their dedication to serving others, coupled with their vision for the building, will have a positive impact on the community.”
The health system did not disclose the purchase price of the hospital with Becker’s.
The hospital is located on Mercyhealth’s Rockton Avenue campus. The health system will maintain more than 500 employees at the physician clinic adjacent to the hospital, which will house multiple clinical administrative services. EMS training and its REACT hangar for a helicopter will also be maintained on a long-term basis, according to the statement.
