Cleveland Clinic plans 24th hospital, a $500M facility
Cleveland Clinic is expanding its presence in Florida with plans to build a $500 million hospital in West Palm Beach. The project will mark the system’s 24th hospital and significantly increase its footprint in Palm Beach County
The hospital will be built on newly acquired land and comprise about 150 inpatient beds, an emergency department, a medical office building and an ambulatory surgery center.
“Palm Beach County has long been an area where we have planned to grow to enhance care for the community,” Cleveland Clinic President and CEO Tom Mihaljevic, MD, said in a Dec. 19 news release. “Our expansion plan will transform care for the community with a new hospital and outpatient clinics that provide a broad range of specialties, greater access and innovative patient experience programs.”
The expansion includes a new outpatient facility at 15 CityPlace in downtown West Palm Beach. The 120,000-square-foot space will be nearly four times the size of Cleveland Clinic’s current center in the area. Services will include chemotherapy and infusion therapy, imaging, endoscopy, outpatient surgery and a concierge medicine program.
The hospital and outpatient center will be located just a few hundred yards apart, allowing patients and caregivers to easily move between the two.
A broad range of specialties will be provided in the new hospital, with the flexibility to adapt as community needs evolve. Priority specialties will include heart, vascular and thoracic care, digestive disease care, neurological care and cancer care,” Conor Delaney, MD, PhD, president of Cleveland Clinic’s Florida Market, said.
Cleveland Clinic has had a presence in South Florida for more than 30 years and currently operates hospitals in Weston, Martin County, Tradition and Indian River.
“We’re expanding emergency room services at Indian River Hospital in Vero Beach and labor and delivery at both Indian River and Tradition Hospital in St. Lucie County,” Dr. Delaney said on a recent episode of the Becker’s Healthcare Podcast. “We’re also growing our primary care footprint to better meet patient demand.”
He added that the new inpatient hospital in West Palm Beach — where Cleveland Clinic has provided outpatient care for 15 years — will enable expanded services such as emergency, cardiac and stroke care. “This facility will allow us to take broader care of the community in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County,” Dr. Delaney said.
Cleveland Clinic in February launched a fundraising campaign to support the project and has already raised $150 million toward its $500 million goal, including a $50 million gift from Miami Dolphins owner and philanthropist Stephen M. Ross, according to South Florida Hospital News and Healthcare Report.
