UK HealthCare launches new MyChart tool for organ donor registration

Lexington, Ky.-based UK HealthCare has launched a new organ donor registration feature in its MyChart patient portal. The tool enables adults aged 18 or older to sign up as organ, eye and tissue donors through MyChart, regardless of medical history.

UK HealthCare is the first organization in Kentucky to implement the feature, which was developed in collaboration with Epic and Donate Life America, according to an Aug. 20 news release. The decision is documented in the National Donate Life Registry but is kept private from care teams. Only donation professionals can access the information if needed to fulfill a patient’s wishes after death.

The tool aims to increase the number of registered donors amid a national waiting list of more than 100,000 people — including over 1,000 in Kentucky. About 50% of U.S. adults register as donors through the DMV, but with 180 million MyChart users nationwide, UK HealthCare expects the new option will expand participation.

One donor can save up to eight lives, restore sight to two people and heal more than 75 others through tissue donation, according to the release. More than 2 million Kentuckians are already registered as donors.
