Sutter California surgery center to close

Sacramento-based Sutter Health plans to close its Jackson, Calif.-based Sutter Amador Surgery Center on Oct. 3.

In an open letter to the community, obtained by Becker’s, Sutter Amador Hospital CEO Michael Cureton, Sutter Amador Surgery Center’s ambulatory services administrator, Branden Nelson, and the surgery center’s executive of operations, Johnny Russell, said the outpatient surgery center closure will help “align resources with areas of growing need” in the community it serves.

“The Amador Surgery Center has long provided non-emergency, elective procedures such as endoscopies, cataract surgeries and pain management injections, which could also be conducted in our main hospital facility [Sutter Amador Hospital],” the letter said. “While these services have traditionally been offered at the surgery center, we are currently in discussions with physicians to allow them to perform their cases at the hospital, creating a more seamless and efficient process for patient care.”

Along with provider growth, Sutter Amador Hospital is growing through partnerships, including its 2024 opening of an outpatient dialysis center in collaboration with Innovative Renal Care. The hospital began inpatient dialysis services this spring.

A Sutter Health spokesperson said in an Aug. 20 statement shared with Becker’s that the hospital is actively working with the affected surgery center employees to offer support during the transition.

“Non-emergency, elective procedures currently performed at the surgery center can be transitioned to Sutter Amador Hospital,” the statement said. “We are working closely with surgery center physicians to support patients in receiving care.”
