Stony Brook Cancer Center taps next director
Stony Brook (N.Y.) Cancer Center has appointed Raymond Bergan, MD, as its new director.
Dr. Bergan stepped into the role Aug. 1, according to a July 16 news release from Stony Brook University. He joins Stony Brook from Omaha-based University of Nebraska Medical Center, where he served as the Bill Bures and Jerry Pabst Chair in Cancer Research.
Dr. Bergan previously served as deputy director of Seattle-based Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, as well as chief of the division of hematology and medical oncology, DeArmond Chair of Cancer Research, co-leader of the translational oncology program and associate director of Portland-based Oregon Health & Science University’s Knight Cancer Institute. He also previously served as director of experimental therapeutics and leader of the cancer prevention program at Chicago-based Northwestern’s Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Stony Brook’s previous director, Yusuf Hannun, MD, stepped down in 2022 but continued to serve as interim director until the position was filled. Dr. Hannun will remain at Stony Brook and continue his research on lipids and cancer biology, the release said.
