Sentara opens $278M hospital
Hampton Roads, Va.-based Sentara Health opened its new $278 million hospital, Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, on Aug. 8 in Elizabeth City, N.C.
The 90-bed hospital and medical office building project took four years to complete and replaces a 65-year-old hospital that was leased by Sentara and owned by Pasquotank County, N.C., according to an Aug. 8 news release.
Sentara Albemarle opened its emergency department the morning of Aug. 8, and the former hospital’s ED began an “orderly closure” the evening of Aug. 7.
The development of Sentara Albemarle, which is owned and operated by Sentara, follows a negotiated settlement for a 40-year lease that the health system took on in 2014. The new hospital employs nearly 900 people.
“We have replaced a hospital from another era in healthcare with a state-of-the-art facility, right sized for today, and positioned to serve the community for decades to come,” Teresa Watson, president of Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, said in the release. “There’s also room to expand in the future, should we need to.”
