Russian hackers target hospital equipment: FBI, AHA
Russian cybercriminals are targeting networking devices across critical infrastructure industries such as healthcare, the FBI said.
The FBI detected hackers attributed to the Russian Federal Security Service collecting configurations for thousands of networking devices nearing the end of their life cycles and running an unpatched vulnerability in Cisco Smart Install, according to the Aug. 20 alert.
“It is recommended that hospitals … make this equipment a priority for replacement since it’s no longer supported for updates by Cisco,” said Scott Gee, deputy national advisor of cybersecurity and risk for the American Hospital Association, in an Aug. 21 AHA news release. “It is also a good time to review the process for patch management and equipment upgrades, particularly focusing on patching known exploited vulnerabilities.”
The U.S. Cybersecurity Infrastructure and Security Agency keeps a catalog of known exploited vulnerabilities, he noted.
