Northern Light hospital president to step down

Charlie Therrien, president of Northern Light Mercy Hospital in Portland, Maine, will step down Oct. 5.

Mr. Therrien also serves as senior vice president of Brewer, Maine-based Northern Light Health and president of the Northern Light Health Foundation, according to an Aug. 13 health system news release.

He has been with the system for 15 years and has led Mercy Hospital since 2016, overseeing the completion of its campus consolidation and expansion of services.

In October, Mr. Therrien also assumed the responsibilities of Mike Smith, who was asked to resign as part of the health system’s efforts to reduce operating expenses and establish a smaller leadership team.

“Charlie had planned to move on to his next chapter in 2024 but graciously offered to stay with us for a little longer to lead the important work happening at several of our member organizations,”  Northern Light Health President and CEO Timothy Dentry said in the release.

Northern Light announced three additional leadership changes, also effective Oct. 5:

  • Marie Vienneau, BSN, senior vice president and regional president of Northern Light Health, will succeed Mr. Therrien as president of Mercy Hospital. She also serves as president of Northern Light CA Dean Hospital in Greenville, Maine, and Northern Light Mayo Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.
  • Randy Clark, senior vice president of Northern Light and president of Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield, Maine, and Northern Light Continuing Care-Lakewood in Waterville, Maine, will add CA Dean and Mayo Hospitals to his oversight.
  • Cynthia Faulkner, vice president of philanthropy services, will become president of the Northern Light Health Foundation.
