New York nursing home to pay $12M after neglect, fraud investigation

Owners and operators of Syracuse, N.Y.-based Van Duyn Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing will pay $12 million to settle a fraud investigation by the New York Office of the Attorney General.

As part of the settlement, the nursing operators will put $10 million toward a Resident Care Fund designated to improve resident care and staffing, while $2 million will be paid in restitution to New York’s Medicaid program, according to an Aug. 25 news release from the office of the New York State Attorney General.

Other aspects of the settlement include:

• The installation of independent healthcare and financial monitors.
• The appointment of a Chief Compliance Officer to ensure monitor recommendations are fully implemented.
• Prohibiting the owners from closing or selling the nursing home for at least five years.
