Missouri launches telehealth network for sexual assault exams
The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services launched the Sexual Assault Forensic Exams via Telehealth Network, or SAFEvT, on July 1 with the goal of expanding access to care for survivors of sexual violence.
The program connects hospitals that lack 24/7 forensic nurse coverage with contracted hub sites through a telehealth network, according to an Aug. 19 news release from the agency. Using a hub-and-spoke model, SAFEvT enables remote guidance for hospital staff conducting forensic exams.
Hospitals may continue using on-site forensic nurses or adopt the SAFEvT model. They have until Jan. 1 to begin offering exams.
An interactive map maintained by the department shows which hospitals offer forensic exams and whether telehealth is used. The tool, which is updated regularly, can be filtered by exam availability and modality.
Training for the SAFEvT program began in August 2024. Hospitals have access to free in-person and online courses, with modules organized by clinical role.
