Drugmaker recalls muscle relaxant over labeling error

Unichem pharmaceuticals issued a nationwide recall of one lot of cyclobenzaprine hydrochloride tablets after finding that bottles labeled as the muscle relaxant actually contained meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.

The recall was due to a labeling error in which the cyclobenzaprine 10 milligram label was mistakenly applied to bottles containing 7.5 milligram tablets of meloxicam, according to an Aug. 27 news release from the FDA. Cyclobenzaprine is prescribed for muscle spasms while meloxicam is used to treat arthritis-related pain and inflammation.

Taking meloxicam unknowingly may pose serious health risks, including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and allergic reactions, especially in patients with NSAID sensitivities, the release said.
