Children’s Hospital Los Angeles workforce reductions to affect 439 roles

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles shared plans Aug. 27 to reduce its workforce as part of a strategic realignment.

In a news release, the pediatric academic medical center said the move is intended to “ensure long-term sustainability and mission alignment amid growing financial challenges.” The reduction affects about 439 positions across CHLA — or 5.8% of its workforce.

The hospital cited external financial pressures, including reduced reimbursement from California’s Medicaid program, Medi-Cal. The decision follows several years of cost-saving measures, such as a hiring freeze, cancellation of open positions on fully staffed teams, and efforts to reduce supply costs.

“This was a very difficult decision, and it is a deeply painful moment for our entire team,” CEO Paul Viviano said in the release. “CHLA remains focused on delivering world-class pediatric care, advancing innovative research, training the next generation of pediatric clinicians, and making a difference in the communities we serve.”

CHLA said about 253 employees will be laid off, with affected roles across management, administrative services and clinical care. Their positions are set to end Oct. 28. Another 186 employees will have the option to transfer into newly restructured roles.

“As we move forward, CHLA is committed to evolving quickly to ensure financial viability while staying true to our mission,” Mr. Viviano said.
