Alphabet’s Verily shutters medical device unit

Alphabet’s life sciences subsidiary Verily is ending its medical device program and cutting staff as the company redirects more resources to AI, TechCrunch reported Aug. 26.

Here are three things to know:

  1. The decision was announced in a staff memo on Aug. 25 by Verily CEO Stephen Gillett. This memo was first reported by Business Insider.
  2. Mr. Gillett said the program had produced “world-class, innovative medical devices” but that the company’s future depends on a greater focus on AI and data infrastructure.
  3. The restructuring aligns with Alphabet’s broader push to cut costs while expanding its AI capabilities. The tech giant has conducted multiple rounds of layoffs in recent years, including reductions in its human resources and cloud units earlier this year.
