Unionized nurses at Corewell Health’s Southeast Michigan hospitals have secured retroactive economic adjustments as part of a new agreement.

In a July 29 news release, the Teamsters Local 2024 Nurses for Nurses said its bargaining committee approved a memorandum of agreement that provides union members with a general wage increase, retroactive to March, as well as a $250 bonus and matching contributions to workers’ 403(b) retirement plan.

The union contends that the improvements were previously withheld by Corewell Health but provided to non-union employees in 2025.

“We told Corewell on day one that equitable treatment of Teamsters nurses was our top priority,” Mike Smith, lead negotiator and trustee of Local 2024, said in the union release. “While we are proud to have reached this agreement and secured nurses what they are rightfully owed, this is just the beginning of a longer fight.”

Corewell, however, said in a statement to Becker’s that it was waiting on information it requested from the Teamsters before moving forward with the agreement.

“Last week, the Teamsters provided previously requested information that allowed us to negotiate a 2025 financial package,” the health system said. “This included 2025 pay increases and enhancements to all eligible nurses that non-union team members already received. It has always been our desire to provide these benefits to our nurses, and we are pleased to be able to do so now. We have tremendous, compassionate nurses and look forward to continuing the conversation in future negotiations.”

The approval of the memorandum comes after nurses voted to unionize in November. Both parties are scheduled to resume negotiations Aug. 6-8 in Detroit.

Corewell Health, which has dual headquarters in Grand Rapids and Southfield, Mich., includes Corewell East facilities in Dearborn, Farmington Hills, Grosse Pointe, Royal Oak, Taylor, Trenton, Troy, Wayne and Southfield.
